Finding the "Be Sweets"
| When Rhonda and I were working on our first book, The Onion
Ambassador, Rhonda suggested I hide the words Be Sweet
in the illustrations. I thought that was a good idea, so I
did. The first problem that arose was, we didnt put
it any where in the book the words were hidden in the illustrations.
We had to tell people every time. |
Below are the pages where the Be Sweets
are hidden in
The Onion Ambassador.
- The farmer sitting at the dinning room table with Bee
Sweet Honey on the table.
- The farmer pulling his wife out of bed. On the picture frame
behind the farmer.
- The farmer and his wife waving goodbye to Yumion (on the mailbox).
- The boy with the blue shirt and yellow pants running toward
Yumion (on boys shirt).
The next problem we had with hiding the words in the illustrations
was in Yumion Goes to the City. The night before we were to
go to press, Rhonda and I had the illustrations spread out
on her mothers livingroom floor, counting the Be
Sweets. We agreed there were six hidden phrases. So,
we sent them to the press.
The first day we got the books, Rhonda took them to school
and passed them out to her students. They read the book and
then started looking for the sixBe Sweets. Immediately,
five hands were in the air. The students said, Mrs.
Kight, there are seven Be Sweets in the book.
Sure enough, there are! I mean, I painted them and
could not find them all. |
Below
are the pages where the Be Sweets are hidden in
Yumion Goes to the City.
- On the cover; in the hot air balloon basket.
- The truck with Bland Farms on the side of it (on the tire).
- At the Farmers Market (behind Yumion, on a brown box).
- The top of Stone Mountain (on the box the little boy in holding
- part of the words are cut off).
- Yumion sitting on floor at the train station (the blue bag
the man is carrying).
- Yumion talking to the kids at Zoo Atlanta (on the front of
the girls yellow shirt).
- On the bumper of the white van in downtown Atlanta.
| When Rhonda and I sent Yumions Mountain Holidays off
to the printers, we knew we had it right this time. Wrong!
The title page states there are seven Be Sweets
hidden in the book. There are only six. The printer cut off
one of the Be Sweets. We believe by the fourth
book we will finally get it right. |
Below are the pages where the Be Sweets
are hidden in
Yumions
Mountain Holidays.
- Pres. Carter praying over meal (on the bowl of peas).
- On the front of the houseboat.
- In the leaves, on the ground between Yumion and the two boys.
- . At the gold mine, behind, and to the left of the people panning
for gold.
- On the sign marking the Appalachian Trail.
- In the picture, on the wall behind the man playing the mandolin.
The Be Sweet that was cut off is on the last page.
You can see Be Sw in the Christmas tree.
| When I finished painting Sails, Pail, and Alligator Tales,
I hid the Be Sweets in such hard places; I thought
no one could find them. I was wrong (again), kids have no
problem at all, and adults hardly ever find them all. So for
all you adults who are going crazy trying to find all the
Be Sweets, here they are. |
Below are the pages where the Be Sweets
are hidden in
Sails, Pails
and Alligator Tales.
- In the stands; in Sanford Stadium
- Where Yumion is about to be blown out to sea; in the sand
dunes.
- In Savannah, look at the scroll work in the balcony.
- On Sapelo Island, the bushes where the two children are standing.
- In the rocks behind Yumion on St. Simons Island.
- Look in the sunset clouds.
- In the bushes behind the mother alligator.
| Finding the “Be Sweets” has been such a success,
I continued it in my new series. I think the more I hide “Be
Sweet” in the illustrations, the better I get. In fact,
I now have to write on the back of the paintings where “Be
Sweet” is hidden! |
Below are the pages where the “Be Sweets” are
hidden in
Jeremiah Makes History Hop.
- Where Bob Wayne is holding onto Jeremiah:on the
left page, in the tree.
- On the barrel in the Union soldiers tent.
- In the dugout at the baseball game.
- On Dr. Martin Luther King’s pin.
- Jeremiah running from the Creek woman; in the grass
on the left page.
- In Mary Musgrove’s belt.
- On the roof of the building behind Sequoya.
- In the balcony of Jimmy Carter’s page.
